Labeled a Dead Head |
I am curious. What is the most unpleasant thing you encountered because of the label "Dead Head". Is it assumptions people make? Prejudices they have? Comments you hear?
For me it is the assumption that I use recreational drugs (I used to, haven't in a very long time) just because I like the band.

Re: Labeled a Dead Head |
I'm quite happy to be called a Dead Head. It makes me a bit unusual in the UK. These days people I speak to about my musical taste tend to fall into 4 categories - those who know about the band and don't like them, those who know about the band and like or respect them, and those who have no idea what I'm talking about. There is a lot of misinformation out there about the length of shows and indulgences, but I find that particularly among my own age group (late 50s) people have a warm feeling for the band and their fans.

Re: Labeled a Dead Head |
most people who have never listened to them just think they get up there and play the same song for 2 hours without any form of direction. ive had numerous people try to tell me this and i can guarantee they have never even heard or been to a show. just going by the "stereotypes". they dont realize how much songwriting talent jerry & bobby had. anyone who tries to tell you this, just hand them a copy of american beauty and workingmans dead to start with just to get the whole 2 hour long song thing outta their heads. then give them 5/7/77 and 5/8/77. if they dont like that then they will never understand. we're part of a somewhat exclusive club and i kinda like it that way. im coming close to filling up my second hard drive with dead shows and people think im nuts. we all know we're not nuts though. just addicted

Re: Labeled a Dead Head |
Years ago I used to hear a lot of crap from people about my music, but these days not a peep. I have metal Skull Fuck Badge on the head post of all my bicycles so I get asked about it a lot on rides, but nobody says much. When people on rides or at the gym ask what I have on my ipod I will say...Dead,RatDog Further,Van..etc They usually reply..Oh I think I have heard of that "Van" group, but have no idea who the rest are.
A lot of time has past since the end of the Dead,so a lot of casual music people have no idea....

I have a small Stealie sticker on my Colnago. I occasionally hear, "You're a Deadhead?!?!"

Re: Labeled a Dead Head |
Ditto . I never smoked it, dosed , or even drank ( a beer once in a long while ), never drove a VW buss etc. etc. etc.
Most people don't even know what they were like . Some people think they "took a bunch of drugs and got up and tried to make music ". Some people fooled by the few tunes they might have heard, might also get the wrong idea .
So I am more bothered by people ( often who should know better ) who denigrate the band and it' music, that I am by those who make "those
assumptions " about me .

Re: Labeled a Dead Head |
It still bothers me at times, that people make the assumptions when I tell them I am an avid head. They look at me like "wow, your a father of two with a maters degree in history and teacher and you like the dead." It is almost the look of "oh civilized people would not listen to that band! Hahah, ut wtf let people have their assumptions, it is their loss that they missed out on some great music and conversation. Proud deadhead I am!My wife though thinks I am out of control geek when it comes to dloading shows! Hahahahaha, have a great weekend forum and go B's tonight let's close the flyers out and make boston fans sleep well!

They ask how many shows I went to and I tell them 9. Then they go "That's all?", and give me a look of disdain. That hurts.

Re: Labeled a Dead Head |
I pretty much make a point to avoid using that term. Frankly it makes me crindge because I often associate it with the whole granola stereotype and I'm not really of that persuasion. Neither was the band really as far as I can tell

Re: Labeled a Dead Head |
What, you don't know the one that goes, "Jack Straw from Wichita / Gave his buddy granola"?
Honestly, I think the stereotypes have pretty much dissipated. And besides, I'd guess we all fit other labels rather more blatantly nowadays, anyway ... particularly things like Parent, Person with a Job, etc.
I assume folks who see someone as a "a Deadhead" nowadays are seeing it as just another additional factoid about someone, like "vegetarian" or "Democrat" or "Bruins fan" or "Civil War re-enactor" or "scrapbooker" or "bow hunter" or whatever. (No, I am not all those things, LOL.) I doubt many people in 2011 take it to mean that someone is a stoner living in a VW bus!

Wait - the rest of you aren't stoners living in VW buses?
I am disillusioned. Here I thought I was among the like minded.

No, no ... I was just referring to the stereotype having dissipated with time amongst the general populace. I didn't mean it wasn't TRUE. Personally I live in a tepee. And Micah and Deb are raising the kids in a schoolbus. C'mon over for a drum circle some time.

I hear in Santa Cruz the banana slugs have drum circles. That way people know they're cool banana slugs, and they won't get squished.
